Digitization Fund: Spectator has archives reaching back to the late 19th century, and we have already begun turning our shelves of historic issues into a fully searchable database. Right now, our issues from 1877 to 1953 and from 1993 onward remain undigitized—but you can help us finish the job. Your donation to the Digitization Fund finances and expedites our completion of this costly, time-consuming endeavor. To view our live archives, click here!
Work Study Fund: Columbia attracts a an increasingly socioeconomically, ethnically, and geographically diverse student body, and Spectator staff members come from a variety of financial situations. must recruit from undergraduates representing a variety of financial situations. In order to maintain our staff as a true cross-section of Columbia University and retain diversity in coverage, we must provide a small number of qualifying editors with financial aid through the Federal Work Study Program. A donation to the Work Study Fund gives us the resources to continue to offer such crucial aid and to grow the program in the future.
Technology Fund: To produce the highest quality paper, Spectator journalists require the cutting-edge tools of the trade: high-quality cameras and video cameras, the latest publication software for publications, and well-functioning desktop computers. A donation to the technology fund affords such pivotal equipment to our office and staff. To view our wish list or to make an in-kind donation, click here.
Daily Operations: Producing a daily paper is expensive; Spectator prints 5,000 partially color broadsheet issues Monday through Friday (and an additional 1,000 copies of our magazine, The Eye, on Thursdays) and distributes them at about 60 locations throughout Columbia University, Morningside Heights, and West Harlem. A donation to our daily operations finances the paper’s daily production.
Event Sponsorships: Spectator hosts media-oriented speaker panels, donor/alumni events, and journalism development workshops in its office on Broadway and throughout New York City. These events allow us to enhance our impact on the community as well as create more meaningful ties to our alumni and donors. By sponsoring an event with cash or in-kind donations, you can help us cover expenses related to refreshments, presentation materials, and space reservations.
